Senior Project Volunteers Needed at North Lawndale College Prep

Below, please find our request for volunteers, as well as a link to the Senior Project web page, where they can sign up to be an “expert.” Attached is the description for an “expert.” Please remind your recruits of our upcoming first meeting and that they should indicate their preference for either an 8am or 10am meeting time when they sign up. They can either contact me directly or sign up via the website. The process should take no more than 2 minutes to complete, either way. Please encourage them to view sample projects from last year, to get an idea of what a finished product may look like. http://www.nlcphs.org/seniorproject/sample-senior-projects

NOTE: This is only a 3 day commitment: November 21st (either 8am or 10am- you pick the time), January 25th @ 12pm, and the week of March 27th-30th- at a mutually agreeable time for you and the student. THAT’S IT! Click here if you are interested in further information. This link will allow you to visit our Senior Project website, and fill out the form on the "How to Become an Expert" page.

I am happy to answer any additional questions you or your colleagues may have. My contact information is listed below.

Thank you for your interest and please spread the word…the more the merrier!

Senior Project Volunteers Needed

Each senior must successfully complete a research paper and make a related presentation to an independent panel of judges. Help prepare a senior for this all-important culminating project.

BRIDGE THE GAP.

Bridge the Gap between your desire to give back, and a real opportunity to do so. We are not asking you to bake brownies for a bake sale or to chaperone a field trip to a museum. (Have you BEEN on a school bus lately?) How about getting involved by helping a student prepare for a college level thesis while still in high school?

Of course, you know where we are - our two campuses pillar the North Lawndale community on Chicago's West Side. You also know that every NLCP faculty and staff member works tirelessly toward our mission, successful graduation from college! But, do you know how NLCP pursues that essential "College Prep" part of our name?

To be prepared with the skills necessary for "successful graduation from college," NLCP graduates must successfully complete two components: (1) 24 course credits and (2) Senior Project, at least at the level of a B-. To us, Senior Project demands the critical skills necessary for graduation from college: curiosity and questioning, research within different types of sources (books, journals, interviews, periodicals), close reading and note taking, outlining, writing a college-level research paper, and a formal presentation given to a panel of independent adult evaluators.

Sounds like fun? It is. There is nothing more beautiful than watching a young mind grow in agility, confidence and ability.

We'd love for you to become involved in this year's Senior Project process. Each senior will be paired with what we call an "Expert," someone proficient in his/her field who wants to guide others toward a deeper understanding of the field. Please note while the title of this volunteer role is "expert," do not let this title discourage you. Trust us, our students need you and you DO have expertise you can share.

An ideal NLCP Expert offers life experience and experience with the research process. Life experience may include a college degree in a particular field, work and/or volunteer experiences, and knowledge of the real world. We're confident as an adult with valuable life experience that you can bring a measure of expertise from either your career, hobby or another area of passion.

We know you want to give back. Bridge the Gap! We hope you will become an "Expert"!
