How to Become a community Partner with Chicago Cares

Who We Are

Chicago Cares builds stronger communities in Chicago through volunteerism. We work closely with community leaders to identify and research critical needs. We then develop targeted programs and mobilize thousands of volunteers to address those needs.

Our programs make Chicago a better place to live for everyone. We inspire people to give of their time and energy, creating a real sense of community and shared responsibility.

Since 1991, Chicago Cares volunteers have completed more than 1.1 million hours of service through more than 25,000 group volunteer projects.

Become a Community Partner

What could your organization accomplish for our community if you were given the opportunity to utilize 10 volunteers every month? Every week?

What about 100 or more volunteers on one day?

Chicago Cares partners with community organizations, schools and parks to increase their capacity to be the solution to our real challenges facing our community. Our staff works with each partner to identify the most pressing needs and then creates and manges a project or series of projects that puts volunteers to work meeting those needs in an meaningful way. All projects are lead by trained Chicago Cares volunteers leaders and staffed by Chicago Cares volunteers.

If your school or non-profit organization is interested in becoming a Chicago Cares community program partner, it's easy to get started:

Chicago Cares staff will follow-up when an opportunity that matches the needs of your site is available. Although we cannot accommodate all community partner applications, we do review each application; the best way to be sure your site will be considered to is to have a current application on file with us.

Volunteer...it is the difference

"I need a job"
"I've been out of work for six months"
"The unemployment rate is high"
"I can't find a job"
"I've just been laid off"

Currently, this is the sign of the times and there is no getting around the above statements. No matter where you go or who you talk to you will surely find someone discussing the state of jobs in America. Instead of spending too much time on the obvious there are other ways to make a difference that may lead to a new career.

Why not volunteer?

A few benefits of volunteering
  • Help others
  • Gain skills/learn about new opportunities
  • Meet new people/network
  • Discover something new
  • Make a difference
How to get started as a volunteer

First consider and determine what you do well and what you would love to do for someone.

1. Research organizations that match what you love to do
There are a ton of not-for-profit agencies that are always seeking good volunteers. A good place to start your research is
  • Chicago Cares, Inc.
    2 North Riverside Suite 2200
    Chicago, IL 60606
    (312) 780-0800
  • VolunteerMatch.org
  • www.serve.illinois.gov
2. Be sure to ask questions
3. Attend all orientations and meetings associated with the assignment/project
4. Be committed & honest if you are unable to fulfill the assignment
5. Enjoy the experience and make a difference in the community

Stand for Children: Performance Counts

We need to raise our voices together to make sure every child receives the best education possible. The time is NOW! It only takes a few minutes of time to change the lives of hundreds of thousands of children. We need YOUR voice to urge legislators to support Performance Counts.

Standing with you,

ElizabethOkey

in greater amounts!
So, open your mouth, lad!
For every voice counts!”

Performance Counts: A common sense solution to build better schools in Illinois

Dear Supporter of Performance Counts,

Contact your legislators and ask them to support Performance Counts!

The numbers are startling.

A student who attends Chicago Public Schools from kindergarten through senior year of high school receives (nearly) four fewer years of schooling than their peer in Houston.

How could this be? Because Chicago students have one of the shortest school days and years in the entire country. Chicago Public Schools students go to school for less than 6 hours a day, for just 170 days per year. Houston students go to school for 7 hours a day, for 180 days a year.

And who suffers from Chicago’s short day and year? Students and teachers.

This is unacceptable. Will you contact your legislators and tell them we need a longer school day & year?

The more time students spend in the classroom, the more prepared they become for college or career. Chicago’s incredibly short day also results in students being deprived of enrichment, recess, and even time to eat lunch!

The short day and year are equally frustrating for Chicago’s terrific teachers, who tell us the district’s short day and year keeps them from doing their best work for students.

Given the tremendous challenges many students face, much more learning time is needed to help students succeed in today’s brutally competitive world.

The sad fact is that right now CPS students generally aren’t well prepared - only 6 percent of Chicago Public Schools students receive a college degree by age 25 and the vast majority of CPS graduates need remedial courses in college.

Despite Chicago's glaring lag in learning time, past efforts to lengthen the school day in Chicago have gone nowhere. Time and time again when Chicago Public Schools attempted to lengthen the school day and year it was thwarted by the Chicago Teachers’ Union leadership, hurting students and great teachers.

From our perspective, enough is enough. It’s time to draw a line in the sand and say: “no more selling our children short.” It’s time to put students’ well-being at the center of contract negotiations. The Performance Counts legislative agenda would do just that.

Click here to learn more and ask your legislators to address Chicago’s short day and year.

I look forward to working with you to pass Performance Counts in order to lengthen Chicago’s school day and year to give students the education they need and deserve.

Best,

Jonah Edelman

Striving in the Land of Opportunity:
The Paintings of Carolina I. Reyes
Presented By HumanThread
co-sponsored by Whole Foods Market South Loop
April 4-30, 2011/ Opening Reception: 2nd Fridays Gallery Night
***Friday April 8th, 6-10pm***
CHICAGO-The HumanThread Center in Pilsen’s Chicago Arts
District showcases the next exhibition in its thought-provoking
series. Celebrating a culture of peace, HumanThread expresses
Chicago’s creative culture by curating monthly exhibitions that discuss
issues of cultural identity and social importance.
The mixed media paintings of Carolina I. Reyes showcase the disparity
of life played out amidst the Chicago landscape.
Chicago’s urbanity is at once thriving and crippling, hopeful and stifling.
Reyes depicts the honesty of what it is to struggle to get by in this
conflicting environment. The artist utilizes acidic color juxtaposed with
portraits, symbols and icons that make the works simultaneously alert
and humanizing. Drawing on a combination of graffiti, pop art, and mural
painting Reyes warns the viewer to consider that every big idea yields a
cost, even in this land of opportunity.
Reyes was born and raised in Chicago and holds a BFA from Columbia
College. Exhibition on view for the month of April.
Exhibit is open by appointments:
April 4-30, 2011
(student/group visits welcome)
Open to the Public:
2nd Fridays Chicago Arts District Gallery Night on April 8th: 6p – 10pm,
