Job description

The Elementary Tutor Team Leader’s role is to dramatically increase student achievement in literacy and math with data-driven instruction by managing and supporting school-based Elementary Tutors. The Elementary Tutor Team Leader (ETTL) will work under the supervision and with the support of the Director of Elementary Curriculum and Assessment to manage full and part-time tutors in schools on the south and west side of the city. The ETTL have the opportunity to serve in the following schools/communities:

  • Bethune School of Excellence, East Garfield Park
  • Dulles School of Excellence, Greater Grand Crossing
  • Harvard School of Excellence, Auburn-Gresham
  • Howe School of Excellence, Austin
  • Johnson School of Excellence, North Lawndale
  • Morton School of Excellence, Humboldt Park
  • Sherman School of Excellence, Englewood

The Elementary Tutor Team Leader role includes both tutoring and supervisory responsibilities:

  1. Provide individualized tutoring to small groups of students in literacy and math concepts, skills, and reasoning to underperforming students in grades 3 to 8 students;
  2. Plan and implement lessons according to the guidelines provided by AUSL and in accordance with Illinois state learning standards;
  3. Assess students’ learning levels and track their progress;
  4. Reinforce expectations regarding student behavior and support the ongoing development of a positive learning environment and culture; and
  5. Under the direction of the AUSL Elementary Curriculum Director, complete other responsibilities related to the implementation of high-quality curricular initiatives at the school site or for the AUSL elementary school network.
  6. Recruiting, selecting, training, and supervising tutors and part-time tutors/aides;
  7. Managing and scheduling part-time tutors;
  8. Monitor assessment data and create reports;
  9. Supporting initiatives of the Director of Elementary Curriculum & Assessment;
  10. Collaborating with school clerks to manage the hiring process and track hours of part-timers; and
  11. Cultivating and managing partnerships for the sourcing of tutors and part-time staff (e.g., non-profit partners, education schools)

AUSL is a nonprofit teacher preparation and school management organization partnering with the Chicago Public Schools to dramatically improve student achievement at schools in high-poverty neighborhoods. Job qualifications

  • Experience with urban students;
  • Previous teaching experience or work with children;
  • Strong skills and conceptual understanding in literacy and math;
  • Familiarity with various learning styles and modalities and a range of instructional approaches;
  • Competency in organizing materials and data and in prioritizing tasks;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent listening capacity;
  • A bachelor’s degree or are in the process of completing an education degree and/or obtaining teaching certification;
  • Proficiency in word-processing, spreadsheets, web-based resources, data management, computer applications; and
  • Ability to manage, motivate, and select teams of small group instructors/tutors.

Hours & Compensation

  • This is a 12-month position with 8-hour days, Mondays-Fridays, with a 30-minute lunch break.
  • The salary is $33,000. AUSL offers health and dental insurance for which employees pay part of the premiums through payroll deductions. This position also includes paid time off for vacations, illness, and holidays.
